My Deviant Art Journal.
I admit, I've never touched this. I rarely feel a desire to write about my day, or events of significance for some online public to eat up. I joined Twitter once but it felt a bit.., well.
Why do I write one now? Well, it's quite a boring night. My 2TB external drive containing a good seven years worth of files just died so I'm a bit short of entertainment at the moment. In the short two seconds it mounts before turning off again (no luck actually browsing the drive or examining it, just a quick recognition that the device exists) it does identify itself by the name I gave it's main partition. So, hopefully it isn't actually dead and just needs taking out to stick into a drive enclosure.
I also wanted to see if I would receive any comments. Heh. A selfish reason, I suppose, and one that will likely see little in the way of surprise.
It seems the universe has yet to be destroyed by the Large Hadron Collider, remember how many of us actually came to believe that there was a chance that this could actually happen? Though I didn't think the universe could be destroyed by such an experiment, I remember allowing for the possibility it could spark some reaction or chain of events leading to either this planet being destroyed or rendered uninhabitable. Though logic told me that as most of it's functions occurred elsewhere naturally anyway, we could at least be assured that the risk was low.
The fears were there, though.
As we approach 2012, it's likely some other 'catastrophe' will rear it's head and scaremongers will attempt to find reasoning and logic in some non-existent pattern.
It's still strange for me to think that we live in 2010.
It's a year I spent most of my childhood reading about in decades old science fiction novels.
Still waiting for my personal jetpack and transportation sphere, guys!
We live in a time of strange extremes.
There's the wonder of our rapidly advancing technology, FINALLY taking on some of the forms that we read and watched about growing up as it throws us touchscreen tablets and devices that hold a wealth of music, literature and media. Not to mention Science in general as we discover our first actually habitual (though uncomfortable to the human form) exoplanets and medical technology increases to develop.
This makes us feel that our future is a bright and shining one.
And yet then we have the other end of the spectrum. The crippled economy, Governments that care little for their peoples, the constant threat of war and terrorism, racial and religious extremists and hatreds. These mark the times we live in as harsh and uncertain, where in the UK there is the feeling that one is lucky to have even a terrible, low paid job than the constant possibility of no employment at all. No company is safe, no position is secure.
Though again, at least we have internet access (Unlimited but capped, what a strange contradiction, my beloved Internet Provider.). How 'bad' our lives are is a sobering thought when considering how bad they could be.
And while we distract ourselves from our lives with the media of the times, I have to say we've been getting some good ones (Thus ending my small and limited social commentary). Fringe continues to shock and amaze me as it begins its voyage into season three, and Stargate Universe is beginning to mature after its growing pains. While the pain of losing Tennant is still there, Smith, I must admit, makes a compelling Doctor. Though if it were not for Murray Gold's fantastic new Doctor theme I probably wouldn't enjoy it as much. I cannot wait for the soundtrack to Season Five to be released, the music has been amazing.
